Straight Solutions: EcoSort®

Easy workplace recycling…

Company: Travis Perkins

Problem:
Travis Perkins was keen to develop its internal waste management procedure and add new material streams to its current recycling scheme. In order to further reduce the amount of waste that it sends to landfill, Travis Perkins wanted to replace all desk side office bins with communal recycling points to encourage employees to recycle more of their waste. For this, the company required a workplace recycling solution that tied in with its existing recycling scheme for cans, cardboard and plastics.

Solution:
The company already recycles over 5,000 tonnes of cardboard and plastics each year and wanted to further improve waste segregation. Travis Perkins opted for the EcoSort® Recycling System and rolled out more than 4,000 EcoSort® Recycling Systems across 1,250 sites to source separate paper and general waste.

As the EcoSort® containers are used to collect paper, Travis Perkins selected the EcoSort® Midi container to prevent the container and its collected contents from exceeding health and safety weight regulations. Travis Perkins also chose to use frame lids to clearly colour code the bins for the correct materials.

Collected paper is picked up by Travis Perkins delivery vehicles, bulked up at distribution centres and then sent on for secure destruction at Sundeala’s paper pulping process. At the pulping process it is recycled and made into pin boards which are sold at Travis Perkins branches.

Results:

  • Recycling rate has increased by 10% within 8 months.
  • Travis Perkin’s recycling rate is now in excess of 50%.
  • An additional 1,000 tonnes of paper recycled each year.
  • Significant increase in recyclates segregated.
