This new Wheeled Bin Caddy is a new and exciting addition to the Straight kerbside container range. It transforms a standard 240 litre wheeled bin into a multi-compartment recycling system. Nesting inside the mouth of a wheeled bin, the Caddy allows residents to separate materials with no additional effort.
The new Blik Modular Recycling System is now available from Straight plc. It is a sleek three drawer container designed for the collection of separated dry recyclables in an outdoor environment.
In the current climate with local authorities being asked to save money in every way possible, a significant cost saving initiative is the promotion of home composting.
Straight plc, which manages the National Home Composting Framework, has commissioned research from Resource Futures into two key areas. Firstly, the future value provided by modest investments in home composting programmes and secondly into the general level of compost bin take-up to date. Both reports are available as a free download from the Straight plc website.
The research demonstrates that financial savings for local authorities associated with the provision of home composting bins are substantial. Although there are some uncertainties relating to future fuel costs, the status of separate food waste collections and Landfill Tax, the research shows that net savings for a local authority over a 'bin lifetime' of 15 years could be in the region of £190 per bin. Local authorities running a scheme in an area of 50,000 households with high bin distribution potential and providing a modest subsidy to the programme to improve up-take could expect savings of more than £600,000 over the lifetime of the bins.
"Of course, a trade-off exists between levels of bin uptake and the extent to which the public or the local authority pays for the bin," said Dr Julian Parfitt, Research and Technical Director at Resource Futures. "If a local authority subsidises the scheme more heavily, the initial costs are higher, but then the take-up will also be higher."
"In reality, no matter how the local authority approaches this trade-off, according to our research the financial benefits are clear to see. The overwhelming savings made from avoided landfill costs and gate fees outweigh any promotion, distribution or bin subsidy costs within just five years, showing there to be a clear financial case for local authorities to continue the promotion of home composting across the UK."
Following several years of heavy promotion of home compost bins by WRAP there have been suggestions that the market for home compost bins is saturated. A further report from Resource Futures investigates this claim by considering factors that influence the uptake of home-composting bins such as the presence of charged garden waste collection services, age group and home composting participation rates to predict the potential for additional home composting bin distribution across England.
Results show there are still extensive areas with a lot of immediate un-tapped potential for home composting in terms of meeting the demand for home composting bins amongst new recruits and also those households that are already composting at home. Indeed, the statistical model presented in the report offers strong evidence that the market for home composting bins, is far from saturated, particularly considering that the methodology applied is a conservative one. Even those areas that have already pushed home composting can still do more.
"It has been suggested that the home composting market is 'saturated' at 35% of households with gardens participating", added Dr Julian Parfitt, "but there is no reason why a local authority that has achieved this level of participation shouldn't now be pushing towards 45% or 50%. Home composting remains the most cost-effective way for dealing with garden waste and householders that are willing to compost at home should be given every encouragement to get involved and to remain involved."

Straight plc's home composting programme is proving to be a great success with 20% of English districts now already signed up or in the late stages of negotiation for the new campaigns.
The home composting initiative begins on 1st October 2009 and takes over from the successful WRAP programme. A key difference is the price for the goods, which are significantly improved from the latest WRAP offering. As the manufacturer of the core compost bins and accessories, Straight is able to offer the most efficient logistics and hence the best price.
Straight Chief Executive Jonathan Straight commented, "It is important that councils maintain a home composting capability through the autumn. Leaves will be falling off the trees leading to demand. Residents will naturally expect their local council to have an offer running."
"There is a lot of talk about a national framework campaign. We are supportive of this initiative but it will not start until 2010 at least. For this reason we are offering a seamless transition from WRAP for the remainder of 2009. Any council, who signs up for 2010 as well, will have prices fixed for the duration of the campaign. For those who want to wait and see, we can maintain a capability through the autumn."
Along with prices which are 20-30% lower than WRAP prices, Straight offers a "buy one get one half price" deal and a range of discounted accessories. Water butts are offered too which helps councils with their broader conservation initiatives.
"In terms of processing large volumes of orders we are ready," added Straight. "We dealt with more than 1.5m orders for WRAP and we can handle every council in the UK if we need to."

Compost bins and water butts cannot be delivered either economically or in volume through traditional parcel couriers. We have developed a national network of specialist carriers controlled by intelligent routing software. This gives us the ability to tightly control all deliveries. Goods are always delivered within the stated timescale as anything not confirmed as delivered three days before its due date is rerouted out of our warehouse at our expense."
All customer addresses are collated and are presented to WRAP for ongoing support from the RecycleNow programme in the future.

Many businesses in the UK are increasingly aware of the need to recycle the amount of waste they produce with particular emphasis on paper and confidential waste. In a bid to increase their recycling rates, Oldham Council is further expanding its food waste collection trial. Following a successful pilot scheme, the Council is set to rollout more than 80,000 of Straight's 23 litre Kerbside Caddies.
This year sees Straight return to the CIWM exhibition with a new range of innovative organic waste containers. Straight has further extended its portfolio of food waste containers with the addition of 7 litre and 10 litre Kitchen Caddies in both solid and ventilated versions. Straight now offers a complete range of sizes from 5 litres upwards.
Newcastle City Council will be the first local authority to rollout Straight's new 20 litre Wheeled Bin Inner Caddy. The 20 litre Inner Caddy will be used with 140 litre blue wheeled bins, also supplied by Straight, to collect dry recyclables.
Straight plc is working with Yorkshire Cancer Research by reviving the iconic 1960's characters the Clangers as a way of promoting home composting and raising much needed funds for the fight against cancer.
Launched in 1969, the Clangers are distinctive, long-nosed, mouse-shaped aliens who speak to each other in high pitched whistles. Although they have not been on our screens for some years, they remain part of popular culture and are fondly remembered. Straight has recently been awarded sole supplier status on a national framework for the supply of home compost bins to local authorities around the UK and will donate 10p from the sale of every compost bin to the charity. It is hoped that at least £10,000 per year can be raised this way for the charity over the next two years. The Clangers, created by the late Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin, perfectly tie in with Straight because they are experts in recycling all manner of useful materials.
"Because the Clangers were particularly aware of their environment and were early recyclers, they are perfectly suited to helping with our home composting campaigns," said Chief Executive Jonathan Straight. "The Clangers imagery will appear on promotional leaflets and the dedicated retail websites set up for the council campaigns."

Straight has successfully worked in partnership with Southern water for the past 6 years and have run a number of different water conservation promotions with them over that time. Water Companies are set targets by OFWAT to encourage their customers to conserve water. Straight assists Water Companies to meet this goal by promoting a range of water saving products.
Straight was successful in winning a contract from Dartford Borough Council to supply 40,000 of its 55 litre kerbside boxes and lids. The contract was designed so that the successful contractor would also deliver a comprehensive range of promotional and support services.
Straight plc, the environmental products and services group, is pleased to announce that it has acquired the business and certain assets relating to the UK manufacturing operations of Helesi plc. Customers should expect business as usual going forward.
Until recently, Helesi manufactured 2-wheeled bins in Bradford. The moulding machinery and several bin moulds will now transfer to one of Straight's main moulding partners allowing UK production to recommence within the next few weeks.
The Group will begin selling the products directly to its wide customer base and will assume Helesi's position supplying the UK and Irish markets, as well as taking over existing customer contracts and supply agreements. From March 2010, the range of two-wheeled bins will be jointly branded 'Straight' and 'Helesi'.
As part of the agreement, Straight has entered into a strategic alliance with Helesi under which it will become the exclusive UK and Irish distributor and licensee for Helesi plastic 4-wheeled bins and other products. Straight will also have the right of first refusal to import and distribute any new products developed by Helesi.
Despite holding a 10-15% share of the UK wheeled bin market, Straight has never had a proprietary product. Straight believes that the addition of this proprietary wheeled bin range will significantly strengthen its position in its core markets.

Straight has further strengthened its operational function with the appointment of Paul Corscadden as Technical Operations Manager.
Paul has more than 10 years senior management experience in the plastics sector through previous roles at Polynorm Plastics, CML Group Ltd and more recently Craemer UK as Operations Manager, where he was responsible for the development of its Telford wheeled bin business.
In addition to his operational strengths, Paul also brings with him a strong technical background, having been awarded a Ph. D. from The University of Liverpool.
Paul will report directly to Mark Halford, Operations Director at Straight and will oversee the day to day running of the Operations department, bringing together the Production, Logistics and Inventory operations of Straight's trade business. Paul will also assume responsibility for a number of development projects, as well as providing support to both the New Product Development and Quality functions.
Mark Halford says, "Paul brings a wealth of technical expertise and knowledge to the company and will provide a valuable contribution to the operational function. Paul's appointment will provide a more defined structure to the operations department enabling a more efficient and planned approach to be applied. We are delighted to be welcoming Paul to the company and wish him every success in his new role."

Greener gardens and less waste for Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council with the Straight Kitchen Composter
As one of the first cities in Wales to introduce a kerbside recycling scheme, Newport has always been forward thinking when it comes to recycling. Working in partnership with Newport City Council, Wastesavers Recycling has been instrumental in developing the City's successful kerbside collection, which contributed towards Newport being awarded the title of the UK's Greenest City in 2007.

Bradford Metropolitan District Council further expands its recycling initiatives by adding the Inner Caddy to their growing list of recycling services
Following the success of its food waste collection scheme, Sefton Metropolitan Borough Council has chosen Straight's market-leading 23 litre Kerbside Caddy as its container of choice. The Council recently purchased more than 5,000 of the 23 litre Kerbside Caddy along with the Straight 5 litre Kitchen Caddy to replace some existing containers and to further develop the scheme.
Babergh District Council has expanded its office recycling system with the purchase of over a hundred of Straight's 60 litre Slim Jim containers and colour coded lids in a bid to boost the Council's recycling rate.
Hillingdon Council has chosen to make free composters available to further divert waste away from landfill. Straight's 220 litre Compost Converter, made from recycled plastic bottles, will be available to all residents in the borough completely free of charge.
A new 40 litre Inner Caddy has been introduced by Straight plc to join its larger 55 litre version and Swale Borough Council is first to order the new container which will sit inside the 240 litre recycling bins.
Straight plc has recently been accredited with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certifications. Both the quality assurance and environmental management standards were achieved ahead of the target deadline.
In the UK alone, over 3.5 billion pieces of gum are disposed of every year. However, people who drop their chewing gum on the streets of Leeds are being reminded of the sticky situation they are creating for others. Following Sollihull Metropolitan Borough Council's successful trial of Gummy Bins, which saw chewing gum litter levels drop by 72%, Leeds City Council has decided to trial 25 Gummy Bins.
2008 marks a new beginning for Straight as we move into our new state-of-the-art riverside premises. The new office building designed by Carey Jones Architects offers 127,000 sq ft of quality waterside space and sits directly on the banks of the River Aire in Leeds city centre.
New pre-treatment regulations for the disposal of waste under the EU Landfill Directive means there will be an increase in recyclable materials being source separated before collection. Many organisations have had to adapt the way that they dispose of their waste by introducing recycling amenities or expanding their current facilities to ensure that an element of their waste is pre-sorted.
Straight recently supplied Newcastle University with more than 200 Recycling Modules and Colour Coded Bins for use around the campus. Although the University's paper and card recycling rate is already good at 27%, the University realised that they could further reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill if they recycled more and composted their food waste. Newcastle University is currently developing its own Sustainability Strategy and wanted to encourage both employees of the University and its 18,000 students to use the recycling facilities on offer.
To help staff to support their Sustainability Strategy, the University placed the Recycling Modules in staff kitchen areas. These areas have limited space, so the Recycling Modules offered the perfect solution by providing a vertical recycling system with a small footprint. The modules take up little more space than a household bin, yet allow colour-coded source separation of materials. The University is collecting plastic bottles, food and drink cans, mixed glass and food waste in the modules which offer proven health and safety benefits and are easy to empty and clean. Newcastle University is currently in the process of purchasing an in-vessel composter which will enable all food waste to be composted on site.
The University has placed its 60 litre Colour Coded Bins in the communal areas of the site allowing both staff and students to deposit paper, card, newspapers, bottles and cans. Following the installation of the Recycling Modules and Colour Coded Bins, recycling participation rates have increased and they now have very few contamination issues as all collected recyclables are source separated meaning the quality of collected materials has dramatically improved.
Sarah Boulger, Waste Manager for Newcastle University said "We are extremely pleased with our Recycling Modules and Colour Coded Bins and have already placed a further order. Sustainability at the University has increased in importance and recycling is one way of showing our commitment. We hope that by raising awareness of these issues and making a conscious effort to reduce the amount of waste that we send to landfill, a more environmentally friendly thinking will ensue."
Councils in England affected by WRAP's decision to stop supplying home compost bins at the end of September will be able to continue to promote home composting through a broad programme offered by market-leading home compost bin manufacturer Straight plc.
Straight plc has won tenders to supply seven local authorities in Wales with food and kitchen waste collection equipment worth approximately £1.42m.
In a move that brings together two of the largest suppliers of specialist containers to the waste management and recycling sector, AIM listed Straight plc has conditionally agreed to acquire Blackwall Limited for a mixture of cash and shares and intends to merge the two businesses. The purchase was approved at a meeting of shareholders on 17 January 2005.
Epsom and Ewell Borough Council have extended their kerbside collection scheme to include the new 50 litre Mini Bin from Blackwall the first Mini Bin order to be fulfilled by the Straight and Blackwall partnership following the merger in January of this year. The merger of the two companies creates a business worth over £20 million, one of the biggest suppliers of containers for recycling and composting in the UK.
The Council currently use the Blackwall 55 litre kerbside boxes and 47 litre blue recycling bags to collect paper and the Mini Bin will be added to reduce assisted collections across the Borough.
The Mini Bin is fitted with 2 heavy-duty wheels, which makes it easy for those who may struggle with the weight of a kerbside box when bringing it to kerbside, therefore reducing the requirement for assisted collections which can be time consuming and costly.
Other features include a close fitting 'throw back' hinged lid and can be supplied with an added steel latch to lock the lid. Available with or without wheels (without wheels reduces the cost per unit and increases the capacity) the Mini Bin's tall upright design takes up minimum floor space allowing residents to keep the bin in a corner of the kitchen or by the back door.
Jon Sharpe, Epsom & Ewell's Recycling Officer explained why he chose the Mini Bin over other containers available on the market: "We chose the 50 litre Mini Bin because it's strong, study and easy to move. It can be left indoors or out and we will be offering them to those residents where we currently collect from the back door so that they can bring the bin to kerbside on collection days."
The Mini Bin can be branded with corporate logos and recycling messages dependent on order quantities. Manufactured to the highest quality standards the Mini Bin is the strongest container of its type on the market and guaranteed for 5 years.

Following an extensive development period, Straight has entered into the steel bin market with force with the launch of the Steelybin ® at this year's RWM. The 1100 litre Steelybin ® is Straight's first foray into metal waste and recycling containers. Straight has already announced plans to further expand the Steelybin ® brand by developing a full range of sizes over the coming months.
In recent years, Straight has been building its range of products to assist many business sectors with their waste and recycling requirements. In the last two years, Straight has supplied almost 1,000 Step-On containers to the largest NHS Trust in the UK, the Leeds Teaching Hospitals. The containers are used on wards to dispose of clinical waste at the six different hospitals around the city.

There is increasing pressure on businesses to take action and reduce the amount of waste that they create. In Wales, recycling rates are on the up as more local businesses strive to go green.
Straight is seeing an increase in demand for its smaller kerbside boxes as Councils are separating out heavier materials, such as glass and paper, for collection. Recent contracts have been secured for the Straight's 40 litre and 44 litre containers.
Monmouthshire Community Recycling (MCR) is a community-based, not for profit recycling company that works on behalf of Monmouthshire County Council to run recycling services. Established in 2003, MCR's services have rapidly grown and the group now operates a weekly box scheme using Straight's 55 litre Ergo Kerbside Box to collect dry recyclables from over 28,000 households.

Straight plc, Europe's leading supplier of recycling containers, has been selected as the key supplier for wheeled bins and sole supplier for kerbside boxes through the Eastern Shires Purchasing Organisation (ESPO). ESPO was one of the first organisations to run an on-line tender in order to award the contract.

The Council wanted to ensure that the system was extremely efficient and easy for both residents and collection crews to use. A small indicator attached to the Kerbside Caddy was considered the best option for this purpose to meet all of the Council's requirements.
The unique BagFlag™ fits onto the back handle of the 23 litre Kerbside Caddy providing a permanent and effective way for residents to request liners. BagFlag™ can either be fitted during the production of the Kerbside Caddy or fitted retrospectively and as the flag remains attached to the caddy at all times, it cannot be lost.
Manufactured from tough, flexible, bright yellow rubber, the durable BagFlag™ is fully waterproof making it ideal for outdoor use. Its bright colour means that the flag is also highly visible, even in dark conditions. When attached to the Kerbside Caddy, the BagFlag™ rotates 270 degrees, which enables the flag to be easily flipped up when new liners are needed and discreetly folded away under the handle and out of view when not in use.
