Babergh District Council has expanded its office recycling system with the purchase of over a hundred of Straight's 60 litre Slim Jim containers and colour coded lids in a bid to boost the Council's recycling rate.
The Council is using the new containers in the council offices to collect paper, plastic bottles, cans, card, brown envelopes and general waste. Since installing the Slim Jim containers the Council has increased its recycling rate by more than 25%. Babergh previously recycled just 50% of all office waste. However, the Council now recycles between 75% and 80% of all waste produced.
The Council believes that it is important to set a good example by "practising what they preach" and recycling their waste. The office recycling scheme is part of the Council's drive to create a more sustainable workplace. The scheme has also enabled the Council to promote other sustainability issues such as energy and water efficiency.
Jonas Grist, Waste Strategy Officer for Babergh District Council said, "Although we did have an office recycling system previously, the introduction of the Slim Jims and interchangeable colour coded lids with material stream labelling has made office recycling much easier, more convenient and hence even more effective."
Jonas continues, "Slim Jims offer excellent value for money and are an economical method of source separating collected waste successfully. With their ultra sleek design, each Slim Jim has a narrow footprint, which means that they are extremely space efficient. The containers also do not require the use of liners, so the collected contents can be easily emptied directly into a 'slave' bin/bag, thus saving costs and resources."
