Hillingdon Council has chosen to make free composters available to further divert waste away from landfill. Straight's 220 litre Compost Converter, made from recycled plastic bottles, will be available to all residents in the borough completely free of charge.
The home composting scheme is open to all households and was originally launched in August this year. So far, the scheme has proven to be extremely successful with over 4,000 home composters delivered to residents in just two months.
Hillingdon has already exceeded the government's recycling target for 2006/7 of 34% and is now working hard towards achieving 40% by 2010. The council hopes that the scheme will contribute towards reaching this target and help to reduce landfill costs by providing an easy and effective method for householders to recycle even more of their green waste.
Kathy Sparks, Deputy Director for Environment, said: "The scheme has been well received and feedback from residents has been very positive. Composting is really easy and I hope everyone takes advantage of the scheme. By recycling and composting more, we can all help to reduce the amount of waste being sent to landfill."
Due to its success, the council is already exploring the possibility of extending the scheme to cover schools and allotment holders.
The Compost Converter is the UK's best selling composter, with more than three million sales to date. Strong and rigid in construction, the Compost Converter needs no assembly and is simple to use. An extra wide hatch allows easy access to the finished compost or alternatively, the Converter can be easily lifted off the compost heap. Each Compost Converter is guaranteed for 10 years.
